Coach Of The Month | 0 | by TrackMan
Coach of the Month: Alex Beckett

Name: Alex Beckett
Age: 29
Coaching at: Peter Field Golf Shop @ Norwich Family Golf Centre

TrackMan User since:
2015

When and why did you start playing golf?
Encouraged by a golfing active grandfather from a young age but took up the game aged 10 with friends from school.

What is your HCP?
Scratch.

Which is your favorite golf course?
Royal West Norfolk, amazing raw links course that really takes you back to how golf began, weaving in between the tidal and dunes. At certain times of the day you cant even get to the course as the tide floods the road. Its one of the unique courses where it runs 9 holes out then turn round and head back for the back 9, always in fantastic condition and welcoming.

Do you have a favorite coach you follow and why?
Not sure I can really tag one as a favourite as I’ve got books scattered all over the house and training bays, but big influences come from Ben Hogan, Jim McLean and Dave Pelz for all his short game work. I love the guys who you can see have a real passion for knowledge but break it down to its simplest form and feel based drills.

Who is your favorite player and why?
It has to be Tiger Woods, for a golfer of my age and era there isn’t anyone cooler or more impressive. He’s influence the game so much and what he has done on a golf course over the years with his miraculous shots, fist pumps, club twirls and that famous stare. For me he is the greatest.

What is your best golf related achievement?
As a player, I had a spell where I won 3 regional PGA events in a row with the last one finishing with 4 birdies in the last 5 holes to win by a shot then following that with a top 10 finish in a Europro event, a purple patch I won’t forget in a hurry.
As a coach, being selected to be the U18 Norfolk Elite coach in 2016.

As a golf coach, what is the most common mistake among players you see?
Clubface control is a huge one, everyone heads to the range and tries to hit the ball straight. Where as it doesn’t really matter how it flies through the air as long as you get to your target consistently. I encourage players to try and hit shapes, practice hitting lefts and right, develop your feel and understanding of what it all feels like, that’s playing golf not just being a range pro.

What are your greatest professional strengths?
I have a huge desire to see golf grow, my thirst for knowledge is high and I’m highly competitive, so if I feel someone knows more than myself I go and watch videos, read books, blogs and articles until I have built up a greater understanding.

What’s in your bag?
Driver: Callaway Big Bertha Alpha 815 9º Tour AD Di 6 X-Flex
3 wood: Taylormade RBZ tour 14.5º Fubuki X-Flex
Hybrid: 3 Ping Crossover Tour 80x Flex
Irons: Mizuno MP5 4-PW Modus 105 X-Flex
Wedges: Mizuno T7 50º-54º-58º Modus 105 S-Flex
Putter: Odyssesy 7 California 101
Ball: Pro V1

How often do you play golf yourself?
I try and play as much as I can but maybe in winter once a week in summer 2-3 but hit balls on the range most days.

What has changed since you started working with a TrackMan?
The simplicity and terminology of my coaching, you can see very clearly if you have an issue in an individual area and you can work on that one specific. It gives you a black and white of the impact factors then to translate that into swing mechanics and then what improvements the changes can make.

Which is your favourite TrackMan feature, and why?
Love the Test Centre, brilliant to be able to test yourself against others around the world including tour professionals. Can provide precise feedback on which part of your game needs to be worked on.

How and where can golfers get in touch with you?
We have a Store website: www.peterfieldgolf.co.uk

Do you have any suggestions, how TrackMan can do better or differently?
You see so many professionals using it, I’d love to see more amateurs not being afraid of it. So maybe get involved into something like the Trilby tour here in the UK which is on Sky Sports or even just a combine skills test player of the month.
