Name: Sven Nielsen
Coaching at: Trump International Golf Club, Dubai.
TrackMan User since:
When and why did you start playing golf?
At around 18 months of age, in our back garden my father introduced me to the game, as he did with many other sports, but golf I always seemed to love and be good at. I can remember at around the age of 5 or 6 braking some windows in our back garden, trying to perfect the flop shot, but ended up with me getting some plastic balls to use… which of course when my dad was away I’d use the actual golf balls, which put a lot of pressure on the chipping action to not break a window.
What is your HCP?
I turned Pro in 2008, so I’ve not had a HCP in a few years now. The lowest HCP I’ve had was +3 during my junior days as an Amateur in South Africa, which I will struggle to keep up with just now.
Which is your favorite golf course?
With the exception of Trump International Golf Club Dubai, I’d have to say Trump Turnberry, the re-designed Ailsa course is phenomenal. The stretch of golf from the 3rd all the way to the 12th will be unrivalled in the world of golf. Watch out for the Ailsa course reborn in the official golf rankings this year!
Do you have a favorite coach you follow and why?
I do follow my fellow South African Andrew Rice on social a lot, I would say he would have been one of the first coaches I followed who used TrackMan, so it was good taking all the good aspects of what he was teaching and moulding my own opinions on using TrackMan.
Who is your favorite player and why?
Tiger Woods without a doubt. He was my golfing hero when I was growing up. He has certainly achieved a lot in the game, and has grown the game more than anyone else. The one thing I admire about Tiger most is his will to always improve. To go and change his swing so many times during his career striving to continually improve is certainly something to look up to.
What is your best golf related achievement?
Representing South Africa as a junior Springbok in a 4 man team, and being the only unbeaten man in the competition will always be highlight.
As a golf coach, what is the most common mistake among players you see?
I would say people neglecting the importance of set up. Sometime the basics influence numbers more than anything else. When you look on tour, most PGA and European players have ‘strong’ set up position in both long and short game. They all swing the club different, but they all have great fundamentals in set up.
What are your greatest professional strengths?
I am very patient and I treat every lesson on an individual basis. To be a good coach you need to understand each individual from not just a technical point of view, but mental and physical too, so I do my best to understand the individual and adapt my teaching to fit them.

How often do you play golf yourself?
I try and play at least once a week or whenever I get a chance I go out for 6 holes (this is when I take TrackMan out with me to look at some on course numbers, I do enjoy experimenting with my own game to see what works and what doesn’t)
What has changed since you started working with a TrackMan?
I have found that the pupil have responded positively to the recommendations/changes that we will make better. I guess pupil respond better to seeing a figure, this way they can see if that figure is improving or not. So it has certainly made my job easier and more fun.
Which is your favourite TrackMan feature, and why?
The features are all great, its hard to pick one, all are so relevant to different players, if I had to pick a couple; The TrackMan Optimizer is a great tool to use. I use it all the time to see if pupil are optimising their potential. The new TrackMan 4 has certainly a much improved capability with picking up wedge shots, so teaching on the short game has become much easier. Also, being able to video a client to compare numbers to that particular swing. I am also very excited to start using the TrackMan putting up!!
How and where can golfers get in touch with you?
Golfers can get in contact with me by emailing the Golf Academy at Trump Dubai on email@example.com or emailing me directly on firstname.lastname@example.org
Do you have any suggestions, how TrackMan can do better or differently?
Not at the moment, all good.
Would you like to be the next TrackMan coach of the month?
All you have to do is sign up on TrackMan University and complete Level 1,
we will randomly pick a new coach every month.
