Maximise Your Downswing Acceleration

Drills | 7 | by TrackMan

In this video i explain the findings from my research into how players reach high pelvis rotational velocity speeds during the downswing.

    Chris

Im trying to understand this. In laymans terms you mean the players with a higher pelvic speed in downswing stopped turning their hips later in the backswing than someone with a lower speed?

    cheers

      Hi David

From the research, players with higher pelvis speeds allow their pelvis to turn at the start of the backswing then stabilise half way compared to slower pelvis players

    Hi Chris

This all looks very interesting, but how do I know what my pelvic speed is??? Plus how do I improve my X factor?? My swing speed is around 90mph with a driver.

    Thanks
    Paul

      Hi Paul

Thank you for your question. The only way of measuring your pelvis speed is to schedule a session with a coach who uses 3D technology like myself.

Improving x-factor is primarily down to locating where the weakest is i.e. mobility, movement pattern or both. 3D FMT and movement pattern screenings identifies this and from the result it can often be straight forward to work on through either specific stretches, swing rehearsals on a specific movement or both.

Someone like yourself with 90 mph driver speed would benefit immensely from a 3D assessment.

KVest recommends a 50% turn with the pelvis against the torso in the backswing. I.e the 40/20 drill. Do longer hitters not do this and turn thier pelvis at a faster rate?

Hi Anthony I see very high pelvis speeds in players who disassociate the lower body from the torso more so on the downswing, which is often a bad thing in that the torso generally can’t catch up with a “runaway” pelvis. Creating less X factor in the backswing for those who have limited FMT will often allow them to be more active with their lower body in the down swing. Down swing loading produces more power than backswing loading as it creates more vertical force and can transfer it into the club head at the right moment.
