Side is the distance from the target line based on where the ball lands
Just as with carry, side is based on “carry flat”.
This means side is the perpendicular distance from the target line at the point where the golf ball is at the same height as where the ball was hit from.
A positive value for side indicates the ball landed right of the target line and a negative value indicates the ball landed left of the target line. A value of zero signifies the ball landed directly on the target line.
Technical Definition:
Side – The perpendicular distance between the target line and where the trajectory crosses a point that is the same height as where the ball was launched from (resting point prior to impact).
TrackMan Combine Averages
PGA TOUR (average distance from target line)
@ 180 yard target = 6.7 yards
@ 120 yard target = 3.1 yards
@ 60 yard target = 1.5 yards
LPGA Tour (average distance from target line)
@ 180 yard target = 7.2 yards
@ 120 yard target = 3.6 yards
@ 60 yard target = 1.5 yards
8 HCP Male Amateur (average distance from target line)
@ 180 yard target = 10.5 yards
@ 120 yard target = 5.2 yards
@ 60 yard target = 2.6 yards
8 HCP Female Amateur (average distance from target line)
@ 180 yard target = 10.9 yards
@ 120 yard target = 6.1 yards
@ 60 yard target = 3.0 yards
The standard assumption for side is zero for all clubs. It is a standard assumption that the ball starts straight at the target and has no curvature (zero spin axis) therefore having a zero side value.
